Kick the new year off with a “CAN”!

It’s the first day of the year of the Tiger in the Chinese zodiac, so we’ve made a list of food pairings with wine for you to try.

Chinese Dumplings — Wealth

Dumplings have a history of over 1,800 years! They are a classic lucky food for Lunar New Year, and represent wealth. Legend has it that the more dumplings you eat during the New Year, the more prosperous you will be in the year to come. Dumplings are usually made with minced meat and finely-chopped vegetables, here at Canned Wine Co. we are extra fond of beef dumplings paired with St Laurent.

Thit kho trung (Vietnamese Braised Pork with Eggs) — Goodness and happiness

Vietnamese Thịt kho trung is the ultimate traditional comfort food during Lunar New Year, or Tet, as it’s locally known, where slow braised pork is served with hard-boiled eggs atop a mound of steamed white rice. The eggs symbolise goodness and happiness in the year ahead. We love the meal with a can of Barrel Aged Verdejo or Viognier.

Crucian carp — Luck

Fish is a really popular Lunar New Year food for prosperity. Among all the fish options Crucian carp is a common choice as the first character of 鲫鱼 (jìyú (jee-yoo)) sounds like the Chinese word 吉 (jí (jee)) meaning ‘good luck'. Eating crucian carp is considered to bring good luck for the next year, so why not try it with a glass of Grenache Rose.
