This summer we received some exciting coverage in The Guardian. Journalist Marina Holland covered canned wine's expansion beyond Gen Z early adopters and called out a series of wines that have "pursued quality". Among them was our "impressive canned red", the 2022 Oak Aged Garnacha.
Made by the Master of Wine Norrel Robertson from old vines in Aragon, Spain, the oak aged Garnacha is a full-bodied, silky-smooth red wine. It has similarities with fine Rioja wines, featuring a deep ruby colour and aromas of vanilla, red fruits and spice. On the palate expect juicy strawberries rolled in black pepper and cherry notes. The tannins have been softened out in oak, making for a delicious ready to drink experience.
If you're pairing this red wine with food, Garnacha works well with grilled red meats like steak, rich ragu sauces in pasta, or an indulgent moussaka. Thanks to its full flavour, it's also a delight with mature farmer's cheddar.
Holland uses retail data to note that "Gen Z are largely behind the recent boom in canned wines". While that may be the case with entry level canned wines you often find in supermarkets that are bought as impulse buys, thanks to food lover supermarkets like Waitrose cans are also now available to discerning drinkers who want to drink less but better wine.
We have also found across the on-trade at some of the UK's best theatres, luxury hotels, stadiums, concerts and travel that canned wines are being well received by people of all ages and from all walks of life.
